What is Occupational Health?

Where work effects health, or where health effects work, it is a matter of “Occupational Health”.

As Occupational Health Physicians we aim to:

Prevent individuals being made ill at work.

Help employees who have health issues or who have been off work due to illness, to return to work with appropriate support.

Develop effective workplace health programmes, such as health and safety policy.

Generally promote health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Why Have You Been Referred?

If you have been absent from work due to ill-health or have an underlying medical condition, or disability that may prevent you from carrying out your normal full range of duties effectively, your company will ask us for advice on how best to support you in your return to work, or to enable you to undertake your job effectively.

Your manager or a member of your Human Resources (HR) Department will have discussed the specific purpose of the referral with you prior to the appointment.

What Happens Now?

After your appointment you will most commonly get actionable advice for you and your manager about likely consequences of any sickness, absence or the functional effects of ill health on work.

The Occupational Health Physician may also advise on rehabilitation required to aid your return to work, or on reasonable adjustments to aid working ability.

This information will take the form of a report, which will be sent to your HR department and, if appropriate, to your line manager, with your explicit consent given by signing a form.

Any information given to them will be factual, relevant, independent and unbiased. It will not include detailed clinical information unless there is a legal or health and safety requirement to do so; for example if your condition means it would be dangerous to drive or use machinery and this is a key part of your role, the actual medical condition would not be shared.

You will be advised of the general content of the report at the end of the consultation, and you will receive a written copy of the report.

We do not offer treatment as this is available through your GP. That said, in some circumstances we may monitor progress to ensure further services are not required. This would be openly arranged between your company, us and you.
